The first indiscretions on ATI R700

Wednesday, November 28, 2007

The website Fudzilla has published a number of articles that provide preliminary information on what should be the specifications of the next generation of video chips top range of AMD, marked with the code name of R700. This new generation of video architectures could take the name of Radeon 4000, with obviously versions aimed at different market segments depending on the cost of purchasing cards. The GPU R700 will be built with production technology to 45 nanometers, and will be combined with each other on various cards depending on the computing power required. Put simply, then, R700 should introduce the concept of core in the mini world of GPU, with card entry level segment that integrate a mini core, mid-range solutions with 2 minicore and high-end cards with 4 core.

It is clear that the differentiation between products will not only vary with the number of core but with the clock frequencies, which will presumably vary depending on the market positioning of cards. Such an approach seems to be realistically feasible for video cards: modern GPU nothing more complex structures that are parallel with stream processors that each operate independently as processing unit somewhat simple but very fast.

Each mini core should support the API DirectX 10.1, but it is not clear at the time how the various mini core will be networked together on the cards. For each of these core will be connected to a memory controller, presumably increasing complexity of the number of mini core mounted on the same day, with the possibility to use a bus to 512bit amplitude as that already seen in ATI Radeon cards HD 2900 XT.

Information about R700 are currently quite low, since the debut of this architecture does not happen before the second half of 2008. If confirmed, with a mini-core approach allows AMD to focus development on a single architecture, riadattandola then in the various market segments more simply mounting on the same core Die obtaining and, in so doing, GPU-end entry level, mainstream and top range.
